Der Mannwolf – First Chapter

Der Mannwolf

Der Mannwolf von Königsberg

Today, I would like to treat you to the first chapter of my (and Timo’s) novel “Der Mannwolf von Königsberg” (The Manwolf of Königsberg). It’s a rough translation, but I hope it gives you an idea of the flavor of the tale.

As this is the very first chapter, rest assured that Caroline does indeed survive this encounter. In order to find out what really happened, you’d have to read the book, of course. Sadly, I won’t have the time to translate it all for you …

Now, enter Caroline, center stage!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Caroline slipped silently through the darkness, taking care not to be seen. She had to guard her secret. Her quick steps were almost inaudible, even on the paved ground. Starlight guided her path. At this late hour, only few people were about.
But what was that?
A shadow stirred below a tree.
Was someone there?
She hesitated. Father had forbidden her to go out at night, but for this task she ignored his rules. Fear gripped her heart. Nobody must find out what she was doing, not even Wilhelm, her beloved brother.
The shape moved again.
She retreated into the shadow of a house and hid in an even darker corner.
For a long time, she stood there, while both cold and weariness crept into her bones and threatened to overwhelm her. Time and again, her eyes closed of their own accord, her head nodding. No, she couldn’t sleep, she had to pay attention! She had to be home in time, before her brother rose, before he looked for her in her little bedroom …
Dear Wilhelm, he took such good care of her, even though she was little more than a burden for him. Her tired eyes closed once more.
“Hah! Got you, little bird!”
She flinched as heavy hands grabbed her shoulders. Sheer horror flooded her body. Fingers tore at the cords of her blouse. The reek of beer filled her nose. Red eyes, drooling mouth, lecherous tongue. Disgust and fear rooted her to the spot, she could no longer move.
Her mind fled.
